There are a lot of medical marijuana products available to Missouri residents with a medical marijuana card, and some of those products may cause you to scratch your head. One of the latest items to hit dispensary shelves is a line of cannabis-infused edible ears endorsed by former boxer-turned-celebrity-spokesperson Mike Tyson. For those who know Tyson’s sordid in-ring history, the product makes perfect sense and demonstrates Tyson’s great sense of self-deprecating humor.
The edible ears are, of course, a reference to one of the most bizarre and controversial moments in boxing history. Mike Tyson, during a world title bout, was disqualified after he took a bite out of opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear. These days, Tyson laughs about the incident and has created gummy cannabis-infused edibles as a way to poke fun at one of the most infamous moments in the history of sports.
Tyson Is Not New to Cannabis
Mike Tyson’s relationship with cannabis is not new. In a 2019 episode of his podcast, the aptly titled Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, the man who was the youngest world heavyweight champion in professional boxing history admitted he and his entourage spend roughly $40,000 per month on marijuana.
These days, Mike’s company, Tyson 2.0, explain that during his prime, he used cannabis “to relax his body and focus his mind.” In his own words, Tyson states, “Cannabis has always played an important role in my life. Cannabis has changed me for the good both mentally and physically, and I want to share that gift with others who are also seeking relief.”
Tyson’s Ear Chewing Moment
The night that Mike Tyson bit into Evander Holyfield’s ear, sports fans were stunned. Tyson and Evander were two of the most legendary boxers of their era and fans waited years for this matchup, many speculating as to which one of the heavyweight greats would come out on top.
“Iron” Mike Tyson had become a legend before he could even order a beer at a bar. At just nineteen years of age, he became the youngest heavyweight champion boxing had ever seen. In spite of his success, Mike had a troubled life, and after a very controversial court case, he wound up serving a prison sentence after being convicted of rape - a heavily disputed charge that he still denies to this day.
While Mike was in jail, Evander Holyfield rose to the top of the heavyweight boxing world. But, his championship status was often tainted, as many people wondered if he would hold the title if Tyson were free to challenge him.
Holyfield retired in 1994, and when Tyson was released from prison and returned to the ring, he quickly became a champion again. Fans clamored for the dream matchup between these two fighters, and the prospect of a big payday brought Holyfield out of retirement, shocking the world by defeating Tyson with an 11th round TKO. But, if fans were surprised by Holyfield’s victory, they hadn’t seen anything yet.
Tyson and Holyfield met each other again in a highly hyped rematch. Evander seemed poised to defeat Tyson a second time when Mike began resorting to dirty tactics. First, he head-butted Holyfield, leaving a gash above Evander’s eye. Then, in the fight’s third round, Mike spit out his mouthpiece and took a bite out of his opponent’s ear, spitting the chunk of Evander’s flesh out onto the canvas.
The referee stopped the fight briefly, but Holyfield wanted to continue. So, as the fight resumed, Tyson did it again, taking a bite out of Holyfield’s other ear. It was shocking, bizarre, and completely unheard of. The fight was stopped. Tyson was disqualified, his boxing license was revoked, and he was fined 3 million dollars.
Mike Bites - A Hilarious Way to Get Relief
All these years later, Tyson and Holyfield have made up. And Mike is laughing at what many would consider the most embarrassing moment of his career by selling cannabis-infused gummy ears that each have a little chunk missing.
The product is proof that Tyson has matured and moved past that shocking moment, as now he can look back and laugh. It’s also great for business. I mean, it got our attention, didn’t it? As for Evander Holyfield, he seems to be able to laugh as well.
Holyfield and Tyson made up in a hilarious Foot Locker commercial in 2013 that saw Tyson showing up to Holyfield’s door to return the piece of ear that he bit off. At the end of the commercial, Tyson quips, “I kept it in formaldehyde.”
Other Notable Athletes Endorse Cannabis
As a professional athlete, it makes perfect sense that Mike Tyson would embrace the healing powers of cannabis. After all, athletes deal with extreme circumstances. Those who participate in sports often have to deal with chronic pain, which is something cannabis has been known to treat effectively.
Medical marijuana can also help with anxiety, which is a factor that high level athletes must deal with as the pressure of winning is constantly being applied. Tyson is in good company. As the stigma surrounding medical marijuana begins to abate throughout the nation, many professional athletes are stepping up and endorsing cannabis products.
