Study Shows Patients Favor Medical Marijuana Over Sleep Aids

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Is Medical Marijuana Better than Sleeping Aids?

A study conducted by researchers at the University of New Mexico and California State Polytechnic University showed that an increasing number of patients are using cannabis as a sleep aid rather than over-the-counter medications. This study was organized to inspect whether or not more individuals were using cannabis compared to sleep aid medications how this affected the current market in Colorado.

The research revealed that once dispensaries began to open in Colorado, the sales of traditional sleep-aids purchased from drugstores saw a decline. These results showed that when individuals have access to cannabis, they select this form of treatment to help combat insomnia and other sleep disorders. While insomnia itself is not a qualifying condition for medical marijuana treatment in Missouri, cannabis can provide relief for insomnia as a symptom of several conditions.

What Marijuana Products Are Best For Sleep?

When it comes to fighting against sleep disorders, some of the most popular forms of marijuana to use are indica-based strains and edibles. THC infused edibles are ideal for sleep as the effects are longer lasting and stronger. It can also be beneficial to select edible products that have a small amount of CBD along with THC. CBD contains anti-anxiety and calming properties which can be helpful for individuals who have difficulty sleeping due to anxiety and restlessness.

Indica dominant strains are another form that can help individuals get a good night’s rest. Indica strains are generally better suited to be consumed during the evening or nighttime as they provide more relaxing and calming effects. The effects can result in patients experiencing a ‘body high’ which can help them fall asleep and stay asleep.
