Patients Prefer Cannabis Over Sleep Aids

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

A recent study reveals that more patients are using cannabis as a sleep aid rather than over-the-counter medications. This study was originally conducted to examine whether or not more patients were using cannabis versus other medications and how this affected the current market of over-the-counter sleep aids.

Cannabis Versus Nyquil

Some of the most popular forms of medical cannabis used for treating sleep disorders or insomnia include edibles or Indica-based flower or oils for vaporization. Edibles with a small amount of CBD and THC are ideal for sleep, as too much THC can often keep consumers awake. Vaping flower or cannabis oils is another way patients can drift off into a well-rested slumber. When choosing a specific strain for sleep, it is recommended to go for an Indica leaning strain to ensure you receive the necessary effects to help drift off into sleep.

In Conclusion

The research shows that as soon as dispensaries began to open, the sales of traditional sleep medications purchased from drugstores declined. The study reveals that when patients have access to cannabis, they opt for this form of treatment to help combat insomnia and other sleep disorders. While insomnia itself is not a qualifying condition for medical marijuana treatment for most states, medical cannabis provides relief of insomnia as a symptom of several conditions.
