80 all-gender spaces
152 spaces for men
112 spaces for women
6 spaces for families
Kansas City's extreme weather plan operates on four levels, each contingent on temperature conditions:
Level 1: This stage is active between December 1 and March 1, with three shelters open every night, regardless of the temperature. The shelters that remain open are Hope Faith, True Light, and Unity Southeast.
Level 2: Running from November 1 to April 1, Level 2 opens four more shelters when the temperature falls to 32 degrees or below, or when it reaches 25 degrees with windchill or 32 degrees with windchill and precipitation. Shelter KC for men, City Union Mission for men and women, and Hope City open up at this stage.
Level 3: Also operating from November 1 to April 1, Level 3 activates three more shelters when the temperature reaches 25 degrees or below, 15 degrees with windchill, or 25 degrees with windchill and precipitation. This brings the total number of open shelters to ten across the city, including Heartland, Shelter KC for women, and Crosslines.
Level 4: If the temperature plummets to 0 degrees or below, every shelter makes an extraordinary effort to increase capacity and accommodate anyone left exposed to the extreme cold.
