Important Information for Medical Marijuana Caregivers

A caregiver is a person who is responsible for purchasing and transporting medical marijuana on a patient’s behalf. Sometimes, a medical marijuana patient does not have the means to get around easily or is unable to travel, so they can authorize another person to buy their medicine for them.

In the State of Missouri, caregivers may also grow marijuana for patients if they have a grow license. Patients can have up to 2 caregivers and caregivers can be of service for up to three patients, but only grow for two.

If you or someone you know would like to authorize a caregiver or if you want to become one, here is some information for you!

Requirements

Caregivers must be at least 21 years old and the patient must authorize you on their application or in a formal written notice. The application to become a caregiver costs $27 to the state.

Caregivers should ensure their patient holds a medical marijuana card and is approved to access medical marijuana in Missouri. Caregivers must apply through the state.

Caregivers should be highly responsible and trustworthy people, and they should understand medical marijuana, your condition, and the effects of cannabis as well.

Rules

It is important for the patient and caregiver to understand that caregivers cannot consume any of their patient’s medicine. They may consume cannabis if they are also a patient with a recommendation.

If a minor who is a medical marijuana patient in the State of Missouri, their parent must be their caregiver.

How to Pick a Caregiver

The State of Missouri does not network patients with potential caregivers, so if you would like to authorize a caregiver, you will have to find your own.

But don't worry! You probably know someone who would make a great caregiver. A friend, neighbor, or family member might be a good option.

Your caregiver should be especially helpful and reliable. They should be willing to research state laws regarding medical marijuana including possession limits, transportation regulations, and more.

Your caregiver should feel comfortable with the effects of marijuana. It is possible that they will be around you when you take your medicine. Some patients even ask their caregivers to help administer their medicine, which can be helpful as well. It is important for them to feel comfortable with this if the patient suggests it.

The perfect caregiver will be somebody who lives near you, someone you trust, and someone who is responsible. The ability to have another person purchase and transport your medicine is an amazing resource, and it is important that the task goes to someone who is up for it so you can get access to your medicine in a timely manner.
