These are our top movie picks to watch while enjoying cannabis this Halloween season:

Scream

Scream has become a cult classic since hitting theaters in 1996. The campy horror flick about a group of high schoolers in the midst of a masked murderer’s killing spree is the perfect way to kick off your Halloween movie binge. Jamie Kennedy’s character lays out the rules for how to survive a horror movie in a monologue that you’ll refer to with each horror flick on your list.

The Shining

The Shining is one of the most surreal and artful horror films of all time. If you’re the type of person who likes to go on a mental journey while enjoying your medically-approved cannabis, Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel may be your perfect Halloween companion.

The plot centers around a writer named Jack Torrance who brings his wife and telepathic son to an isolated hotel where he has been hired as caretaker for the winter season. Jack hopes the remote location will help him overcome his writer’s block, but the hotel’s secrets begin to unravel his mind.

Shaun of the Dead

This may be the ideal movie for medical marijuana patients to enjoy around Halloween. It’s a dark comedy centered around a zombie apocalypse in London.

The 2004 film, which became an instant cult classic, centers around Shaun, a down-on-his-luck everyman. He has a job he hates, a roommate who takes advantage of him, and a disastrous love life. On top of all that, zombies are trying to murder mankind. The gory zombie battle that happens as Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now plays from a jukebox is pure delight.

Hubie Halloween

If you’re looking for the dumbest Halloween movie around, look no further than Hubie Halloween. When we say “dumb,” we mean it in the best way possible. In this Netflix original that premiered in 2020, Adam Sandler returns to the classic, absurd form that made audiences fall in love with Billy Madison.

Sandler plays a dimwitted, well-meaning citizen of Salem, Massachusetts who believes something evil is afoot in his community, but no one seems to believe him. The best gag of the film is the array of inappropriate novelty t-shirts worn by the elderly-and-still-hilarious June Squibb.

Rating: PG-13

Where to stream it: Netflix

The Cabin in the Woods

Medical marijuana patients will understand this movie on a whole new level. The film starts out like a classic horror movie, with typical teenagers entering a cabin in the woods. Twists and turns abound as the audience discovers they are part of some strange scientific experiment, and the cabin is actually a lab. The character of Marty enjoys cannabis throughout the film, and this may be what keeps him a step ahead of what’s coming.

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a fun Disney flick that’s fun for all ages. It’s one of those films that you can watch as an adult that takes you right back to childhood. The plot focuses on a teenager in Salem who accidentally resurrects three witches on Halloween night. The campy witch characters, played to perfection by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, deliver a performance that will have you feeling like a kid all over again.

Deathgasm

Heavy metal and Halloween go together like peanut butter and jelly. It just makes sense. Deathgasm is a hilarious film made in New Zealand that tells the story of a group of teenage boys who form a heavy metal band and accidentally summon an ancient evil entity.

Movie critic Brian Tallerico says it’s “like a Megadeth album cover sprung to life.” If you like heavy metal, ridiculous amounts of gore, and a movie that knows how to make fun of itself, give this one a shot.

Halloween (1978)

This terrifying classic spawned a franchise that is going strong over forty years later. Wearing an inside-out, white William Shatner mask, escaped mental patient Michael Myers returns to his hometown where he stalks a babysitter and her friends.

This time-honored slasher film features a memorable scene where Jamie Lee Curtis’s character smokes a joint, breaking the rules of horror movie good girls. All these years later, Jamie’s still defending that scene,
